How it works

One program period, from baseline to settlement.

The company operating the program sets its boundary, baseline, trajectory and rules. Participants operate against their allowances. At period close, allowances are surrendered and any excess is settled with validated carbon credits, then validated, reconciled and recorded.

The period

Six stages. One record.

01

Establish

The program manager defines the emissions boundary, covering the relevant entities and Scope 1, 2 or 3 emissions, and establishes the required baseline. It then sets emissions limits and a declining trajectory against a selected decarbonization framework.

02

Allocate

Allowances are issued or allocated under the program rules, to individual participants, to a pool, or both. Where the program requires it, participants review and confirm their allowance before it becomes binding.

03

Operate & measure

Participants operate against their allowance position. Emissions are measured at the frequency the program defines, using data from participants, connected MRV systems or other approved sources.

04

Period close

The current-period allowance allocation is surrendered under the program rules and the surrendered allowance units are burned in the register. Where carry-forward is permitted, eligible unused units must be designated before close. Verified emissions above the allowance create a carbon-credit requirement.

05

Settle

Origin Ledgers allocates validated carbon credits to the program. Each credit is issued under an approved registry and held by Origin Ledgers for the program until it is retired. Program credits are assigned to participants, bought from Origin Ledgers or allocated at no charge, as the program rules set. Origin Ledgers retires the underlying carbon credits in the originating registry, naming the participant or program as beneficiary, and the corresponding program credits are burned in the register. Only retired credits settle an obligation. A released credit never settles an obligation.

06

Validate & record

PVN validates and reconciles each lifecycle event against the applicable rules. Origin Ledgers records the resulting program state. The originating registry remains authoritative for the underlying credit.

Two instruments. Two lifecycles.

Allowance
Issued or allocatedHeld in positionSurrenderedBurned

A private contractual permission to account for 1 tCO₂e within a program and period.

Issued or allocated by the program manager.

Surrendered at period close.

Not a government-issued regulatory allowance.

Carbon credit
Registry-issuedAllocated to programAssigned to participantRetired in registry

A registry-issued environmental asset representing 1 tCO₂e.

Allocated from ORIGIN to a program, then assigned to a participant.

Retired in the originating registry.

Allowance surrender. Carbon credit retirement. Allocation commits validated carbon credits to a program. Program credits are assigned to participants, bought from Origin Ledgers or allocated at no charge, as the program rules set.

Who does what.

Authorization, validation, execution and recording are separate controls, held by different parties.

Role Responsible for Not responsible for
Program manager Program rules, boundary, limits, allocation, who buys carbon credits and who bears their cost, and contractual enforcement. Acting for a participant without an explicit, revocable mandate.
Participant Authorizing its own lifecycle actions through its Origin Ledgers account. Seeing other participants’ confidential positions.
Carbon registry Issuing the underlying credit and remaining authoritative for the credit and its retirement. Setting program rules.
Origin Ledgers Supplying validated carbon credits to programs, policy and compliance checks, registrar signing, and the program-specific lifecycle record. Certifying environmental outcomes.
PVN Independent validation and reconciliation of lifecycle events. Authorizing actions or holding keys.

A familiar reference

Shared mechanics. No regulatory status.

Read this first: an Origin Ledgers program has no regulatory status An Origin Ledgers program is a private, contractual arrangement between a company and its participants. Its allowances are created by the issuing company, not by any government or regulator. The program is not an emissions trading scheme, is not equivalent to one, and does not discharge obligations under the EU ETS or any other regulated emissions market. Participation must not be represented as regulatory compliance unless the applicable legal framework expressly provides for that treatment. The comparison below is included only because the underlying mechanics — a cap, a schedule, allocated positions, reconciliation — will already be familiar to readers who know how a regulated scheme operates. It sets out where those mechanics differ. It is not a claim of similarity, standing, or legal effect.
Questions

Questions that come up every time.

Only where the program rules permit. The program manager determines transferability. Permitted transfers stay within the program and are limited to approved participants.

Allowance programs are commercial arrangements established and governed by the company operating the program. They do not, by themselves, constitute regulatory compliance or discharge obligations under an emissions trading scheme. Origin Ledgers provides the infrastructure supporting the program and does not certify environmental integrity.
